Lot description:

AEOLIS, Temnus. Time of Domitian. AD 81-96. Æ (15mm, 2.41 g, 10h). Zoilos, strategos and son of the city). Apollo(?) standing facing, head right, raising both hands, leaning on column / River-god Hermos reclining left, holding reed and cornucopia. RPC II 983; BMC 11. Brown patina. Near VF. Rare.

From the Dr. Michael Slavin Collection.

RPC, following BMC, describe the obverse as Apollo, but this specimen, as well as a couple of others in the RPC database, show much more feminine features. Apollo is typically depicted either completely nude or fully clothed; here, we see a figure draped from the waist down, nude from the waist up and appears to have female attributes. The hands raised above her head seem indicative of Aphrodite.
